What is Micro-Needling Treatment ?
There’s always a new treatment that promises younger looking skin.
More recently, micro-needling has been advertised as a non-invasive way to achieve youthful looking skin. But what is it and does it really deliver results?
It’s a treatment where a device with small needles is pushed (or rolled) over your face and neck area to create controlled perforations. This forces the skin into repair mode. If you have a fear of needles this treatment shouldn’t be rejected straight away as, depending on the device used, the microneedle length can vary from 0.5 to 3.0 mm, which is incredibly tiny compared to a traditional needle. And, these devices are gentle enough to be used around the delicate eye area.
The concept of micro-needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. Following injury to the skin, the body re-uses damaged collagen and elastin fibres to produce new structures. Micro-needling is a controlled process that induces the skin into self-repair mode, by creating micro-injuries that instigate new collagen fusion. This natural action takes place in the dermis and can take 4-6 weeks before the effects are visible on the surface. It does not pose a risk of permanent scarring.

Some Questions & Answers
Who Can Have Micro-Needling Done ?
Most people will find that their skin can benefit from micro-needling as it has a wide range of benefits.
It rejuvenates the skin, minimises wrinkles & lines and helps reduce the appearance of pitting (acne scarring).
Does It Hurt ?
Your technician will apply a numbing cream prior to each session to assist with any discomfort.
If the treatment is being done for general rejuvenation, then the depth of penetration is quite shallow & there is little or no discomfort at all.
If treating deeper lines and wrinkles or pitted acne scars then it can feel a little more uncomfortable, but that is uncomfortable, not painful!
How Quickly Should See Visible Results ?
Visible results are generally seen after 6 to 8 weeks following the procedure and improve further over time.
Skin improvement is noticeable after just one treatment.
How Long Does The Procedure Take ?
Generally speaking approximately one hour.
This includes consultation, numbing and treatment time. Treatment time can vary depending on size of area that’s being treated.
What To Expect After The Treatment ?
The skin usually appears slightly red, swollen and may also feel tighter than usual; symptoms will however subside within a few hours.
Your therapist will give you detailed information regarding all post-treatment aftercare and explain exactly what you should expect.
Is There Any Down Time ?
This depends to some extent on the sensitivity and general health of the skin. Skin will most likely look and feel slightly sunburn for 24-72 hours post-treatment and will begin to flake as skin cells begin to regenerate. Do not exfoliate, avoid heat and sweating as you risk irritating the skin. Skin will heal within a week and the results will be visible.
How Many Treatments Are Required ?
Depending on your skin’s condition it can be between 4 to 6 treatments over a month to 6 weeks apart.
Your therapist will advise the appropriate treatment plan.
